VTS Scheme

The Neath Port-Talbot scheme is an innovative scheme that took its first intake of trainees in August 2004. Although we used to offer a DSP interim year, this has now changed following the recent restructuring of VTS schemes in Wales to make them the same. The Neath Port-Talbot Scheme is therefore similar to many other schemes in that it involves 18 months in a General Practice setting and 18 months in a Hospital Setting.

The scheme is structured as follows:
  • Year 1: Two 6-month hospital jobs (see separate page for available specialities)
  • Year 2: One 6-month hospital job and one 6-month period spent as a full-time GP Registrar (may not necessarily be in this order)
  • Year 3: 12-months full time GP Registrar
The full scheme last three years, although doctors with prior recognised training can apply for a shorter rotation (from 1 year to 2.5 years).

Deanery

The scheme is part of the Wales deanery.

Region

The Neath Port-Talbot VTS involves jobs in Neath, Port-Talbot and Swansea. This part of South Wales is an area of outstanding natural beauty. We have the Brecon Beacons to the North and Mumbles and The Gower Peninsular to the south. The area has excellent schools, and there is plenty to do for trainees and their families. Where else in the U.K can you sail, dive, kayak, rock climb, paraglide, windsurf, go caving, mountain bike, go to the theatre, experience city centre nightlife and restuarants, chill on the beach, shop to you drop and all within a 20 minutes drive?

There are excellent transport links by rail, road and air. All the hospitals and sugeries are within easy reach of the M4. Trains to London take 3 hours from Swansea, slightly less from Neath. There are airports in Swansea, Cardiff (40 miles) and Bristol (80 miles).

Swansea is the second city of Wales, with all the facilities you would expect of any major city.
