General Medicine
Neath Port-Talbot Hospital
There are 7 Medical Consultants and 6 Medical teams. There are 3 medical wards and a Medical Admissions Unit. The hospital runs a ward-based system with the patients of two consultants being based on each of the 3 wards.
The medical teams consist of a house officer and generally either two SHO grades and one Senior SHO or two senior SHO grades and one junior SHO. There are no medical Registrars.
There are two VTS posts at NPTH:
- Respiratory Medicine: Dr M. Ebejer
- Respiratory Medicine: Dr TBC
VTS SHO duties:
Ward Work:
You take part in consultant ward rounds and general ward work. You are also responsible for all patients admitted to MAU under your care (when on-call and post-take) until they are moved to another ward. Dr Ebejer and Dr Lennox both have 16 beds allocated to them on Ward C.
On-calls:
You take part as a second on-call SHO in the medical on-calls, which consist of a 1 in 9 full shift rota. Long day shifts are from 9am-10pm and nights are either Fri-Sun or Mon-Thurs 9pm-10am.
During the on-call you clerk and manage patients referred to you by the casualty doctors during long day shifts and provide support to the house officer clerking GP admissions when necessary.
The Casualty Department, known as the Local accident centre (LAC), is not covered by a casualty doctor between 9pm and 9am. During this period it is nurse led, therefore only 999 calls for chest pain and shortness of breath are accepted over night and you manage these patients.
An On-call room is provided for night shifts.
Outpatient clinics:
You will take part in outpatient clinics seeing patients in both medical and diabetic or chest clinics depending upon your consultant.
