Psychiatry
Staff
Consultants: Dr R. Islam (NPTH) and Dr B. Rosser (Tonna)
Staff Grade: TBC (NPTH) and Dr E. Korsinova (Tonna)
Duties
The psychiatry hospital job is split into two parts: Ward F NPTH and EMI at Tonna Hospital. Each lasts for 3 months and VTS trainees usually decide amongst themselves which hospital to start at.
Experience
You will see a wide range of psychiatric conditions, including more common problems such as depression, schizophrenia, dementia and suicidal ideation/attempts. You will gain experience of both adult psychiatry (Ward F) and EMI psychiatry (Tonna) in addition to EMI outpatient clinics. You will gain an appreciation for the multi-disciplinary working that occurs in order to deliver effective and good mental health care.
NPTH
Ward Work:
You will be involved with ward rounds (Monday all day and Tuesday morning) and ward reviews (Thursday afternoon and Friday morning). You will be responsible for the day to day running of the ward and the patients under your care. You may occasionally be required to review patients in the attached Day Hospital (but there is a separate doctor covering this).
On-calls:
You work a 1 in 7 full shift rota including long days, weekends and nights (split into Mon-Thurs and Fri-Sun). You will be responsible for clerking patients that are admitted and reviewing patients on the ward as may be required. In addition, you cover Ward G (EMI ward at NPTH) and Tonna Hospital. Therefore, you may be called out to Tonna Hospital to deal with an incident. Long range pagers are provided.
As a general rule nights are usually quiet.
Medical cover is provided by the Medical on-call team at NPTH.
Outpatient clinics:
There are no out-patient clinics as part of the Ward F VTS post, though this may change in the future.
Tonna
Ward Work:
Your role at Tonna Hospital is part GP and part SHO. You will be required to do a daily 'ward round' to deal with any new problems. There is a grand ward round on Tuesday morning where the Consultant, Staff Grade, SHO, community pharmacist, OT, PT and social worker will all be present. There is also a meeting every Monday morning in which community patients will be discussed.
On-calls:
All on-calls are undertaken at NPTH. Therefore, see above.
Outpatient clinics:
You will participate in memory clinic, general OPD clinic and anti-dementia medication clinic. You may be required to do a few home visits. Time spent with the Social Worker and Community Mental Health Nurse (usually a morning or afternoon) is encouraged.
